Description

The Church of San Leonardo stands outside the old castle walls of Biselli, with the exception of the small bell tower.

It has a long simple façade with two windows and a 16th-century door (surmounted by a Cross). Square in its layout, the interior has a pink mottled floor and pillars from the early decades of the 16th century set in the perimetral walls. The decoration is almost all from the sixteenth century, mainly by the Sparapane family (depicting St. Claudio, St. Amico, Saints Anthony and Lucy). The same wall also has a votive fresco with a Saint armed with an axe and an eel-shaped dragon lying at his feet (16th century).

In the entrance façade behind the wooden altar, the large niche from the late 15th-early 16th century is frescoed by a painter from Norcia working in the area. It depicts the Madonna and Child on the throne between Saints John the Evangelist and Sebastian. Behind the second altar on the same wall are frescoes of other subjects from the 15th and 16th century, including St. Bernardine of Siena, St. Barbato, and the Madonna of Loreto.

The little stone sacristy door to the left of the high altar stands side by side with St. Urban and St. Leonard (bearing small lordly coats of arms dating back to the early 17th century, the period in which the great stucco altar with its twisted columns, cornices and empty niche was erected). On the wall of the entrance behind an altar stripped almost entirely of its wooden ornamentation, we find the Madonna of Loreto.
